Our learning

What have we been learning this week?

Year 3We thoroughly enjoyed our Calmore walk and have been learning about OS Maps and symbols. We loved investigating the map of the New Forest and Southampton. Next week we are looking forward to learning about Europe.

Thank you to everyone that has already brought in home learning; we have some fabulous projects.

In Maths, we have been adding and subtracting 1, 10 and 100 to 3 digit numbers, investigating what happens to the digits. In English, we started our wonderful story called Jack and the Baked Beanstalk and have been learning about writing good sentences.

Year 4This week in English, we have been identifying the features of a formal letter and planning our own letter. In maths, we have been partitioning numbers up to 10,000 and learning about flexible partitioning. In science, we have been classifying creatures using a classification key.

Next week in English, we will be writing and editing our own letter to our chosen crayon. In maths, we will finding 1, 10, 100 and 1000 more and less than a number. In science, we will be answering our enquiry question using the knowledge that we have learned in our lessons.

Year 5This week we have been learning about the Egyptian tombs. In particular, Tutankhamun’s tomb, what was inside it and how and when it was discovered. The children have been so interested! In English this week, we have been learning to use expanded noun phrases and using different sentence lengths in our writing to create suspense. In Maths, we have been learning to round numbers to the nearest 1000 and understanding the value of 5 digit numbers.

Year 6Year 6 have had a very successful week participating in Bikeability and learning how to ride their bikes safely on the roads. The instructors commented on their superb behaviour and we have been extremely impressed with the progress everyone has made. In English this week, we have been planning our fight scenes in preparation for writing next week. In maths, we have been comparing and ordering numbers as well as learning how to round numbers. Next week, we will be learning to solve problems using negative numbers. Meanwhile, in history, we have completed our learning on the Ancient Greeks. Next week, we will be starting our computing unit of work learning about search engines.
